Frequently Asked

Everything you need to know before heading out on safari.

A wombat is a stout, burrowing marsupial native to Australia. They are known for their powerful build, backwards-facing pouch, and cube-shaped droppings — the only animal in the world that produces cube-shaped scat. They typically weigh between 20 and 35 kg and live for 5–15 years in the wild.
Wombats are crepuscular — most active at dawn and dusk. Our sunrise and sunset tours are timed to coincide with peak activity. Cooler months (April through September) also bring wombats out earlier in the evening, giving longer viewing windows.
Wild wombats are generally docile but should always be observed from a respectful distance. They can charge if they feel threatened, and their solid build means that impact is significant. Our guides maintain safe viewing distances throughout all tours. Never attempt to feed or touch a wild wombat.
There are three recognised species of wombat: the Common Wombat (Vombatus ursinus), the Northern Hairy-Nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii), and the Southern Hairy-Nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons). Our safari also features regional variants including the Forest, Coastal, and Mountain wombats.
Yes — the Northern Hairy-Nosed Wombat is one of the world's most critically endangered mammals. There are fewer than 400 individuals remaining, all within a single protected reserve in Queensland. Active conservation programs are underway to establish a second wild population and protect existing habitat.
Wear neutral earth tones — greens, tans, and browns blend well in the bush. Closed-toe shoes are essential. Bring sunscreen, a water bottle, insect repellent, and a camera. Binoculars are a bonus. We provide all trail maps and briefing materials at the start of every tour.
